Legacy division

THE CLASS

Legacy restores design work inside a strict safety envelope.

Legacy allows a racer-builder team to create a lean-forward or lay-back car rather than assembling a standard molded kit shell. Under current ISBD materials it is a special World Championship or Race Week division, effectively ages 12 through 20, with a maximum combined weight of 275 pounds. It is not a regular local championship replacement for Stock, Super Stock, or Masters.

NDR also races Legacy, but its current About page says age 12 and older with no maximum age. Host cities decide whether Legacy is offered at ordinary rallies. NDR's construction, inspection, weight, and differential documents must be checked separately.

DESIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Freedom creates more ways to fail inspection.

• Body form, driver protection, visibility, steering, braking, floorboard or frame, ballast, and inspection access must all satisfy the exact plan.
• The ISBD plan permits fiberglass or carbon-fiber-type fabric over allowed wood or foam construction, while the April 2025 amendment updates mold and helmet-area foam language.
• Sheet-metal-formed shells remain prohibited in current ISBD amendment language.
• Composite layup requires ventilation, skin and eye protection, controlled cure, smooth edges, and an adult who understands resin systems.
• Weight saved by an exotic skin has no value unless the legal structure remains stiff, safe, inspectable, and inside the total-weight rule.

FROM DRAWING TO HILL

Design around the driver and inspection sequence.

1. Choose the sanctioning body and current plan before creating dimensions.
2. Model the fully dressed driver, sight line, steering reach, brake travel, helmet protection, and exit path.
3. Establish axle, kingpin, wheelbase, clearance, and weight references that can be measured after the body is finished.
4. Review drawings with the chief inspector before permanent tooling or laminate work.
5. Build coupons and practice the material process before touching the car.
6. Preserve access for hardware, ballast, steering, brake, and structural inspection.
7. Document materials, fasteners, build photos, revisions, and written rulings.

The official plan recommends historical construction references for techniques, but warns their dimensions and details do not replace today's Legacy rules.
